It's been great. As it happens, I had to dump my database and re-scan my music collection - which causes all playcounts and scores to be lost (and other stats which I care less about). Here are the steps I took to restore them. Probably is a way to do this with less steps.

I used a free trial of RazorSQL for this - it's ok. Nothing to scream about, IMO, compared to PgAdmin III which I'm used to for this sort of thing.

Extract the data from your db backup with a query like: SELECT title,artist,album,playcount,score FROM songs WHERE score > 0;

Export the data to a tab-separated file

Convert it to a bunch of update statements with a regex

First replace all ' with ''

Then s/{.*}\t{.*}\t{.*}\t{.*}\t{.*}/UPDATE songs SET playcount = \4, score = \5 WHERE title='\1' AND artist='\2' AND album='\3';/

Run the resulting statements on your live database. I believe Clementine needs to not be running when you do this.

Spokane Hospitals vs Medicare statistics

Via this post from the Sunlight Foundation - http://reporting.sunlightfoundation.com/2011/medical-errors-2/ - I thought I'd see how the Spokane hospitals stack up in screwing up. I knew similar things must be available for XML, and went looking. At this point, my usage is focused on read-only access to xml, of varying styles. Values may arbitrarily be in attributes or child nodes.

The two that I found that and decided to evaluate were Anoop Madhusudanan's ElasticObject and Aaron Powell's Dynamics library.

I set up a test application looking to evaluate performance and syntax. I accessed a handful of nodes, including one array of nodes and it's children. For the hand-built version, I set up a simple set of objects with simple properties and wrote code to extract values from XElements.

I had a bit of trouble with the API for the Dynamics library, but I saw some performance promise, so I went ahead to make modifications and support my needs. I went ahead and forked the project on bitbucket to share my changes here.

For the performance check, my Hand-Built code ended up at 6 milliseconds, Dynamics at 75 ms, and Elastic at 237 milliseconds (I pre-loaded the xml into an XElement and timed the parsing). So, the tradeoff here is time spent coding vs runtime. I don't expect my real usage to have a significant impact on the user's experience, so I'm ok with Dynamic's 12x slowdown for now. If it becomes a problem, I'll have a nice bottleneck to remove for version 2 :).

Here are some syntax comparisons:

Attribute Access

Hand-Built

if (t.MizConfig.InstrumentPlatform != "TC")

ElasticObject

if (t.MizConfig.InstrumentPlatform != "TC")

Dynamics plus mod

Multi-level nesting was not possible as written, MizConfig was returning a string. Changed code to allow

if (t.MizConfig.InstrumentPlatform != "TC")

Iterating multiple same-named elements

Hand-Built

foreach (var ch in t.MizConfig.HWChannels)

ElasticObject

foreach (var ch in t.MizConfig["HWChannel"])

Dynamics

foreach (var ch in t.MizConfig.HWChannels)

Accessing Value (non-iterator) as a double. This time it seems it will be finding a permanent home in one of my apps. I had to make a modification to it and Blogger says I have too much text for a comment, so I'll make a new post.

I'm using Resizer inside a docking panel, so I wanted the width to stay tied to its parent panel. With that use case, I've added North, South, East, and West to the ResizeDirection enum. It's a pretty simple change, so I'll just post a few parts that people might miss if they wanted to reproduce it.

private static void OnUpdateSizeCommand(object sender, ExecutedRoutedEventArgs e)
I was interested when the your.flowingdata tool was announced a while back but didn't bother to sign up. Decided to give it a try with the newest release. Seems like fun stuff, though I wish I had a phone w/ a real keyboard.

Anyhoo, I decided I wanted to track how many times I build my software and this is how I set it up.

First, I downloaded Twitter CLI, a command line twitter update post tool. I looked into the powershell options out there, but decided to keep it simple. Unfortunately, the installation timing closely coincided with my installing a service pack.

Long story short, I submitted an issue with Microsoft, got some mixed quality of responses from their support staff, and finally they pointed me towards 3rd party apps interfering and I spent a long time tracking down the source. During the course of that, they asked about a few other third party apps that they've seen cause interference. Today, they closed my bug report as Will Not Fix.

To me, having a system where random third party apps might interfere with your internal communication is defective, and should be resolved. I guess its the benefit of being the big guy. You get to say that certain cases are not important enough to fix. Perhaps its just sour grapes because its my case they didn't fix. I highly doubt Logitech would care that their drivers are causing me to not be able to write software. So, I guess no webcam for me on my main computer.

If anyone's googling for Visual Studio 2008 debug hang and ends up here, try killing LVPrcSvr.exe.

For people reading my blog (hah!) who don't care about my whining, here's a picture of Ruby

From Ruby June Hannah

Ser-tah-fyed

Ruby is all ours, forever. I've been thinking about getting a domain name for a good while now. I was going to do matelich.com, but then came up with mateli.ch. The dorkiness of it makes me happy, though matelly-dot-c-h doesn't quite roll off the tongue. I probably should get matelich.com too and have it redirect to mateli.ch or vice versa, but I'm too much of a spendthrift.

Then google has a free Google Apps for Domains setup where you get gmail to handle your email, and localized calendar, docs, etc. for your domain name. Fun stuff. The kids like getting to pick whatever email aliases they feel like in addition to their own names. Sara's holding out on using her account, but she'll break one of these days :)

If you're a matelich and want an account, let me know. I get up to a hundred. I won't be able to read your email, nor would I. I guess as administrator, I could reset your password, and get in, but you'd at least know I'd broken your trust when you went to login. Oh, and if you have any bright ideas for something to put at http://mateli.ch that would be peachy.

The other move is a bit down the line, but we're in the market for some land to build a house on in the future. Looking for 10ish acres north of Spokane. Put a long-shot offer on a site we really love today, but its contingent on them installing a well. We'll see.

ugly and distracting

Official Google Blog: One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

I, for one of many, hate the new google favicon. It makes me want to open more accounts in more places just so I can track them!

Now I got in on their Inventment account beta, and they have support for my ira, and my 401k's sites, so I can watch expectantly for the day I stop losing money in the stock market :) So, if you like wasting time finding out how much you spent on gas this month versus last month (huh, spent $50 less in may than april, wierd), try out mint.com. Too bad financial information is so personal, it'd be great fun to get some social networking going on there.

I kinda feel bad though. They look at things like how much you've got on your cards and try and hook you up with better deals, which I assume they would get a commission on. I always check them out, but ugh, too much work for too little gain. Well, I'm sure I'll find a way to financially support them at some point. I was thankful we had a dustbuster to take care of them.

Two things in working with WPF that took me a while to figure out.

First, I had a bug where _'s were going missing in a button's label. I'd read about the keyboard accelerator stuff, but it didn't occur to me because I was putting a directory name in there. Quick fix was to make a converter:

public class NoMnemonicConverter : IValueConverter
{
public object Convert(object value, Type targetType, object parameter, CultureInfo culture)
{
return ((string)value).Replace("_", "__");
}

public object ConvertBack(object value, Type targetType, object parameter, CultureInfo culture)
{
return ((string)value).Replace("__", "_");
}
}

Second, I was trying to put some of my common controls and some I'd borrowed from others into a single library. My generic ResourceDictionary just would not get recognized. I googled and grepped until my eyes fell out, then I found this segment to put into the library's AssemblyInfo.cs:

[assembly: ThemeInfo(
ResourceDictionaryLocation.None, //where theme specific resource dictionaries are located
//(used if a resource is not found in the page,
// or application resource dictionaries)
ResourceDictionaryLocation.SourceAssembly //where the generic resource dictionary is located
//(used if a resource is not found in the page,
// app, or any theme specific resource dictionaries)
)]

What a relief!

Oh where oh where has my little dog gone

Boohoo, somehow the front door blew open and Kevin Trevino ran away. The size of the baptism services and the number of people who answer altar calls is impressive.

But we always hoped John Repsold would start a new church like he'd planned, and we've been going there since it opened, Mosaic Fellowship. It certainly is different from any church experience we've had in the past. Initially, trying to attend with 3 kids was kinda painful, but we've gotten better at it, and the kids have too. They have a kids area for 5 and under, but Eliza doesn't really go for that. The biggest problem I have is that they are really focused on getting us active in the community (like we should be) and that is something we haven't made much time for*, so there's a bit of guilt there.

Now I just need to suppress the feeling that I should lead a small group :)

* We do stuff, just not enough for me to not feel a nagging feeling in my heart.

glasses

Got myself some spiffy new glasses. Go to pick up pre-purchased tickets. They're expired - thanks getawaytoday. Pay $50 to update tickets, non-sarcastic thanks to disney customer service. Go have lots of fun. (see update 2)
Wednesday afternoon: Rain rolls in. LA gets more rain in half a day than they did the previous year. Talk of snow possible. We bundle up and take advantage of even shorter lines.

Thursday: Good oranges, bad danishes. Go to California Adventure - lots of Eliza friendly rides closed, but we had a lot of fun. Only a little rain. Didn't get to hit California Screamin' due to light showers though. Emma still loves Tower of Terror.

Friday: Maybe some toast instead of danishes... Hit the beach, started in Malibu, played in the sand a bit. Drove north. Walked out on the Huntington beach pier and we all saw a dolphin leap out of the waves 3 times. Made our day.
Friday evening: Tried to catch the Disneyland parade, but were late so we only caught a little. Picked up a few rides.

Saturday: Ugh, cheap danishes. Back to Disneyland for our last day. Nice weather, had a ton of fun. Headed out late afternoon to find an El Pollo Loco. Got lost. Finally found it really close to our hotel. Oh well. Yummy.

Sunday: Up early to catch our flight. Accidentally kept a key card in my pocket, that'll be an expensive souvenir. Shortly before boarding we hear Spokane is not accepting inbound flights, while they deal with a mega snowstorm. After an hour or so, they finally let us take off. We had just got our tray tables in their upright position and turned off electronics when they informed us of this little booboo and shipped us off to Portland. Being in the back of the plane, we were at the end of the customer service line to get a new flight lined up. After our 90 minute wait in line (why oh why didn't I go find a different agent somewhere to help me?) the next available flight was Monday at 8:20 PM. We took it and then went to wait for an hour for our baggage to be delivered. Finally to the hotel (which we had to pay for - weather related you know), we had dinner and went to sleep.

Monday: Got up to a real continental breakfast - bagels, belgian waffles, sausage scrambled eggs - good work Country Inns and Suites. Took Emma and Abe for a quick swim in the uncomfortably warm pool and headed to the airport to see if we could get on standby. Short story - we didn't. 3 flights went out full with us making doe eyes at the Alaska people trying to get them to give us tickets. Thank goodness the portland airport has a tv playing Boomerang all day. Flight went out late (are there Alaska flights that don't leave at least a little late?), no taxis at the airport for ages, Eliza crying because she had to wake up at 10:30 when we got off the plane, and didn't stop till after we got home at 11:15 (poor tired baby).

Then I got to wake up this fine Tuesday morning and shovel a foot of snow. Did about half of it. Enough to get the van out if Sara gets motivated to go somewhere today. Thank goodness school was out yesterday and today.

Summary - great time in california, terrible time getting home. Thanks to our friends who helped us out while we were gone.

Update: Here's a smattering of pictures
Update 2: Talked to Get Away Today, apparently the expiration date was due to the price we paid. Disney raised prices $10 a ticket after that. $10*5 people = $50.

What if...

Eliza (3 1/2) is a rather imaginative, verbal little girl. Next, of course, was the shock that she didn't faithfully follow my blog :). Anyhoo, she mentioned she'd really like to have something to read the news to her. So I started doing a bit of searching.

First, I tried talkr.com and put those handy-dandy read-this-post tools at the top of each post. Works pretty nice, though machine reading really brings out the dull-ness of my prose.

Next, I downloaded a trial of NewsPiper Pro, but it won't show me old posts I guess. So, I'm writing this one to try and get it to work for me. I'll update this later w/ more info.

Update: Gave up on NewsPiper Pro. Couldn't get it to say anything. Just tried NewsAloud which recently added RSS support. Apparently that doesn't include ATOM support. As much as I love hearing a computer voice saying zero zero seven hyphen comma semicolon four two zero ..., that's not going to work for me.

Well, maybe I'll look at some other stuff later.

Kevin Trevino

Well, I was a bit premature in announcing Poppy the puppy's joining of our family. she only lasted a few days before Eliza realized that puppy teeth are terrifying. We found her a nice new home to be friends with a wiener dog. But the desire to have a new dog wasn't dashed by the experience.

Sara found a 3 year old beagle named Buddy on craiglist, and we went to meet him. Who could say no to such a cute little guy??? He's got pretty good manners, loves to chase cats, knows a few tricks, and has a wiggle-bum like his "cousin" Hercules. The name Buddy didn't work for us because we call Abe our Buddy often. So, after much discussion, we came up with a name we all could agree on - Kevin. Eliza calls him Keveeeeen, like the big guy on 3-2-1 Penguins. Abe likes to call him Kevin 11 as in Ben 10. Emma hangs onto his old name with Kevin Buddy, but Sara's nickname has become most prevalent - Kevin Trevino. She's not sure where it came from, but it just sounds right.

He's a good dog, but this is one of the rare pictures of him. For reasons unbeknownst to us, he is petrified of cameras. Run-and-hide-under-a-bed scared. He and Dexter get along fine, enjoying cat patrol together.

English language rules

Of course, all my kids are the smartest and the best, and Eliza is no exception. Now, you can just drag the line on the map, and it will map a new route with leaving the road before where you grabbed and going where you dropped.

It took a second to change poor directions to my mom's house to the better way. I can wait, or OPEN IT NOW!!!!!!!

So I did. That naughty girl bought me a Nintendo Wii. Whatever will I do now. I'm going to stop sleeping, working and eating, I fear. After a 90 minute lunch, I managed to drag myself back to work, but I'm having trouble not searching for games to buy, figuring out how much extra remotes cost, etc. I named it BollWiivil.

Yippee! Hope the tivo doesn't get jealous.

Yummy Ice Cream

So, I had a pint of ice cream the other night. Featuring the original core members of Shay, John, and Tom, The COUP showed the league what they were made of in this impressive 74-21 blowout [ed. note - the Hillyard Ballers won].

Though the statistician hasn't been hired yet, Tom took home an impressive 5 points, 5 turnovers, and the most impressive foul of the night. We ended up making this lovely elephant out of 15. 8 for the body, 4 for the legs, one for the head with pieces for the ears and handles for the tusks. The non-jug portions are the trunk (newspaper wrapped in duct tape, with a cap taped on the end) and the tail (rolled newspaper circular, with the end snipped to look hairy). We spray painted the whole thing grey and put on the toenails and eyes.

My biggest recommendation, don't assume you got the jugs clean when you rinsed them out. Use soap. It was a little frustrating, but came out pretty nice for a 2 hour project.

Google Reader revisited

I recently wrote about my change of RSS feed aggregators to Google Reader. As a matter of fairness, I'll list the things I've discovered I don't like about Reader.

Can't force an update. I have no idea how to know if its really gotten the latest elements. Also, when I refresh my items from, say, overnight, there are huge chunks of data from sites that I know publish more incrementally. The timestamps appear to be the timestamps from when reader retrieved them.

Akregator lets you have scheduled checks of your feeds, customizable per feed, as well as re-checking one or all at your hearts desire.

No searching. GASP! How can a google product not let me search my feed elements???

Akregator has a quite nice search utility.

In short, I've got a huge tradeoff of functionality right now. So, to sate your desires I figured I fill you in on how I'm surfing the blogs these days. I was fearful my linux box was going to have some catastrophic hardware failure, so I decided to give google reader (http://google.com/reader) another try. Well, they've redone the interface and I'm sorry to say, it leave Akregator in the dust. The ease of use, and the bonus that I can now use it anywhere is almost too good to be true.

Since everyone knows their own likes are the best and assumes everyone else wants to know about them, I've put the reader shared items doohickey on this blog. What that means is if I read something that I think rules, I click a little box and it goes over on the right in "Tom's shared blog posts" (though I don't like what I titled that box). Now you get to know what I find interesting, whoopee for you.

Anyway, give reader a try, and if you want, I'll point you to some good blogs.

CUTE!

By Abe

When Beasts Attack

 Poor Dexter. Got attacked by a dog who lives a couple blocks away when we were out for a walk with Emma and Abe on their bikes. I (Tom) was trying to kick the attacker off, yelling "Get off him, you beast." It does sound like I shoulda been swinging my purse or using my cane, but oh well.

Anyhoo, we took him to the Pet ER and got him all stitched up. He's moving pretty slow today. Very odd to see macaroni sticking out of your dog. The owner of the attacking dog didn't give me any trouble in paying the bill, so that's nice.

Christmas Eve

Finally in bed! Emma is going to be in the Lights program at school, which is their gifted and talented system. Turns out RSS is the name of one kind of "feed." Apparently Blogger doesn't use RSS, it uses Atom. I don't know what the difference is. I don't think it matters. I was shocked after reading my last post to actually look at this blog and see that there was no link to our feed! It now on the side in my links and at the very bottom of the page too.

Let me know what you think of the new layout, too.

Update: Just looked at this under Internet Explorer and the sidebar is all messed up, pushed down to the bottom. How embarrassing :). Let me try to clarify. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It's basically a way for you to subscribe to a list of headlines from some website. Usually a column someone writes or a blog or a comic strip.

There are many different RSS readers out there. I recommended RSS Reader merely because it was the first Windows based tool that looked like Akregator (the Linux based tool I use). Basically, you look for the RSS feed icon, copy the link it goes to and put it in your reader. Then it will check the feed every so often and show you what new items have been posted.

Some of my favorite feeds are 101cookbooks (recipes I'll never make), the dilbert blog (he's annoyingly atheistic, but very humorous otherwise), lots of right-wing blogs (like hughhewitt.com and soundpolitics.com). Oh and each category on craigslist.org has its own RSS feed. I can't believe the number of dogs and cats that roll through the Free list (well, I guess I can considering our track record).

Hopefully I cleared at least something up. Oh, and maybe the last post will make a little more sense, though probably not. Here's a picture Emma made so you don't have go away empty handed.

Blogs, RSS, etc

I started to write this post to inform my family who might read this of what RSS is so they could set up an RSS reader and be able to see when I added more amazing new info. But then I started to worry about their free time.

I fired up KDE's Akregator several months ago to see what all the hype was about. I liked keeping up with http://planetkde.org and preferred it to my email digest of new stuff at slashdot. Soon, I started looking for other blogs I might care to read and found reddit.com, digg.com, oy! Sara made me stop sending her links. Now I've gotten into the blogosphere, instapundit, hugh hewitt, corruption chronicles, and more.

Not good for my daily internet overhead. But I can quit any time :). Anyhoo, http://www.rssreader.com/ seems to look a lot like Akregator (though if you're really brave, download Kubuntu and try out a real operating system).

Get me a shotgun for my birthday

I think I'm going to need it for this cutie. Sose loves blueberry muffins. Her parents let her eat blueberry muffins all of the time. She has blueberry muffin crumbs on pork chops, salmon, tunafish sandwiches, hotdogs, and last but not least, ice cream.

Sose had a twin sister named Dove. Dove is a good sis. She doesn’t pull Sose’s braids.

Sose started feeling funny. She went to the bathroom. She went to the mirror and screamed! Her eyes were blueberries. Plus her hair was blue and white. Her mom saw her and fainted. Could someone help them?

Sose grabbed Dove and ran as fast as she could. Sose and Dove ran to Gram and Gramps house. Gram took them to nurse Emma Matelich. Nurse Emma Matelich had never seen this kind of fever ever. She took them to the children’s center. A doctor came and greeted them and then he took them into a room. After they got in the room, he pulled one of Sose’s hairs.

“Ouch!” she said.

“Did that hurt?” asked the doctor.

“No, but I thought it would, “she said.

He said to one of his helpers, “Take this to the office.” He took it to the office and came back and said to the doctor, “That hair is blueberry muffin!” When he went out of the room, Sose ran out of the room and to her friend’s house. She got her friend’s mom, who drove her to a different country. Sose went to the store in Japan. The storekeeper saw her and told her she saw a girl that looked like her. Sose asked how she got cured. She learned this lesson: You have to have a little of everything, not a lot of one kind of food. And she ate mustard pills. When Sose woke up, she was the same as she used to be. And she was home.

For breakfast, she had waffles and salmon. She put salmon on her waffles. It tasted good. She wondered if there was such thing as salmon fever. What do you think?

April Flowers

I wish I could take credit for these, but they were planted by the previous owners.
